North Star Objective

A North Star Objective is a clear, long-term goal that serves as the guiding direction for an organization. Similar to a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal), it provides a central focus, aligning all efforts and initiatives towards a singular, inspiring vision of success. The term "North Star Objective" derives from the concept of using the North Star for navigation, symbolizing a constant and unwavering point of reference that guides an organization's strategic direction.

Key Aspects of a North Star Objective:
  • Long-Term Vision: Defines a long-term goal that the organization strives to achieve, providing a clear vision of future success.
  • Guiding Direction: Serves as a central focus that aligns all efforts and initiatives, ensuring that the organization moves consistently towards its overarching goal.
  • Inspiration and Motivation: Inspires and motivates employees and stakeholders by articulating a compelling vision of success that everyone can rally around.
  • Clarity and Focus: Provides clarity and focus, helping the organization prioritize actions and make decisions that support the achievement of the North Star Objective.
Similarities to a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal):

  • Inspiration: Both serve to inspire and motivate the organization, creating a sense of purpose and urgency.

  • Educational Non-Profit: "To ensure that every child in our community graduates high school prepared for college or a career by 2025."
  • Environmental Non-Profit: "To restore and protect 1 million acres of critical habitat by 2040."
